Brown Sports Foundation's 25th Anniversary
January 1, 2008 - Decemeber 31, 2008
Nationwide
The Brown University Sports Foundation and Brown Athletics are both at a critical point in their history and a convergence of events presents a once in a generation opportunity. As the Sports Foundation celebrates its Silver Anniversary, Director of Athletics, Michael Goldberger has also unveiled a bold vision for the future of Brown Athletics that will address Brown Athletics' most pressing needs.
The four pillars of his plan are:
1) Integrating athletics more strongly into the educational mission
2) Having the ability to retain and recruit world class coaches
3) Providing the budget resources for our teams to compete at the highest level
4) Developing facilities that are indicative of Brown's overall commitment to excellence
It will take significant investment to achieve Goldie's objectives and sustain Brown's place among the top athletic programs in the Ivy League. Our goal for the 25th Anniversary year is to raise $25 million that will provide long-term stability and growth for Brown Athletics. These funds will address the four critical issues in Goldie's plan.
We need your help to reach this lofty goal. We ask you to think about what the Brown Athletics experience means to our student-athletes, alumni/ae, and the entire Brown community. To find out more about how you can make an impact on this moment in Brown Athletics history and ensure excellence into the future, please call the Sports Foundation at (401)-863-1900.

Men's Basketball Alumni Enjoy Alumni Day Celebration
On January, 26th, many past Brown Men's Basketball players returned to College Hill for the annual alumni day celebration. Around fourteen former players arrived early, laced up their sneakers and hit the hardwood to play in the alumni game. The teams, which were divided up based on positions and talent, played a very competitive game. In front of a crowd that was filled with friends and family, "Team Landau" came out with the win.
After hitting the showers, the alumni reconvened in the Bears Den, had a chance to catch up with each other and enjoyed a nice meal. Following the dinner, the alumni cheered on the Men's Basketball team as they hosted Ivy League opponent Yale. The crowd at the Pizzitola gym was louder than ever as the game was an intense battle for forty minutes. In the end, the Bears won defeating Yale, 77-68.
Head Coach Craig Robinson and the current players got a chance to catch up with the alumni after their victory at the post-game reception. Robinson was very pleased with the outcome of the game as well as with the alumni turnout. He thanked everyone for coming and hoped that the alumni day tradition would continue and grow for many years to come.
Women's Ice Hockey Alumnae Return to College Hill
Women's Ice Hockey Alumnae came back to College Hill and enjoyed the annual alumnae day celebration on Saturday, January 26th. Many brought their families along to enjoy the festivities. Everyone brought their skates so they could enjoy the family skate in Meehan Auditorium. After building up an appetite skating around the rink, the alumnae and their families were treated to a hot lunch at the alumnae reception held in the Davis Lounge. Head Coach Digit Murphy welcomed the alumnae and thanked them for their ongoing support.
Finishing their meals, the alumnae were ready to cheer on the Women's Ice Hockey team as they took on Ivy League opponent Colgate University. The extra support helped the Bears tie, 3-3.
A New Landscape: Transforming Brown's Athletics Facilities
Over the course of the next three years the athletic complex on Hope Street will become unrecognizable to many. As part of the Boldly Brown: Plan for Academic Enrichment, the University has initiated an aggressive plan that will literally transform the landscape of Brown’s athletic facilities and displays the University’s commitment to athletics as an integral part of the education experience.
Construction has already been completed on a new football practice facility that includes two full Field Turf practice fields with lights, measuring 370’ x 380’ and will also be utilized extensively for club sports, intramurals and other varsity teams at Brown. The new complex was made possible by a generous lead gift from John Berylson ’75.
The next phase of that project also includes the installation of more than 700 spectator seats on the existing turf field behind the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center. This additional seating will add greatly to the utility of this facility, providing a high quality early season/bad weather game venue for our men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. The Meister family (Rich ’75, Steve ’76, John ’79, and Charlie ’81) and Bill Kavan ’72, provided the lead gifts that made the field, and now the installation of spectator stands, possible.
In addition, the varsity tennis courts, which had developed cracks in recent years, we completely resurfaced over the summer, giving the men's and women's tennis teams a safer place to practice and compete.
Further, on May 25, 2007 the Corporation of Brown University authorized the design and construction of a new swimming and diving facility on the site of the recently closed Smith Swim Center. The projected $35 million cost includes the demolition of the Smith Swim Center and the construction of a new aquatics facility. The new natatorium will be designed by Robert Stern Architects, the same firm designing the Nelson Fitness Center, and will include an Olympic-sized pool, diving boards, a lobby, locker rooms, dry land training areas, coaches’ offices, and more. Currently, the construction of a temporary training pool for the use of our varsity swimming and water polo teams has until the new building opens, has begun. The temporary pool should take seven to nine months to build and could be completed as early as January 1, 2008.
The varsity tennis courts, which had developed some cracks in recent years, were also completely resurfaced over the summer, giving the men’s and women’s tennis team a safer place to practice and compete.
Finally, a state-of-the-art 15,000 square foot varsity strength and conditioning center has been added to the plans for the Nelson Fitness Center. This $5 million addition now makes the Nelson Center an 80,000 square foot, $50 million project that will become the centerpiece of Brown’s athletic facilities. The new strength and conditioning center will serve the University’s 900+ varsity student-athletes and provide among the best facilities in the Ivy League.
