Women’s Water Polo – $20,000 ALUMNAE/PARENT CHALLENGE – COMPLETED (Through FY ’07)
A Brown Women's Water Polo "angel" donor has stepped up, for the second year in a row, to offer another CHALLENGE to parents AND alumnae. This year's challenge will be two-fold: the first will be a $15,000 challenge to parents with a 1:1 match; the second will be a $5,000 challenge to alumnae, which will also include a 1:1 match. All donations will support the annual-use needs of the program, including two major trips to San Diego and Michigan. The challenge is simple: for every dollar up to $20,000 that that is raised by parents or alumnae, the angel donor will match them. This means all gifts up to $20,000 will be doubled whether it is from alumnae or parents!

For 2005-2006, the objective was to build a more permanent foundation of support and over 270 Cross-Country/Track & Field alumni/ae made gifts to help keep this program among the best in the Ivy League.
Men’s Crew - BRUNO 20 CHALLENGE - COMPLETED
Three of Brown Crew’s most loyal and generous supporters—Art Joukowsky ‘55 P’87, Marc Bergschneider ‘73 P’05, and Norm Alpert ‘80 P’09—stepped forward in 2004 to provide incredible leadership for the Brown Rowing Association by issuing a three-year, $450,000 donor participation challenge.
For the third and final year of the challenge, the Men’s Crew fundraising participation challenge was met and earned the $150,000 in challenge funds. Former oarsmen answered the call in record numbers and the Men’s Crew program had its most successful fundraising year ever. The alumni donor goal of 220 was shattered as 272 oarsmen donated to the program in 2005-2006.
Women’s Crew - FOUNDING MOTHERS CHALLENGE - COMPLETED
Women’s crew alumnae involvement was revitalized after having record-breaking alumnae participation in 2004-05. The response was overwhelming to the Founding Mothers Challenge, as the Friends of Brown Women’s Rowing had a record 178 alumnae donors after averaging just 40 per year before that. For 2005-06, the objective for the Friends of Brown Women’s Rowing was to carry on this new found alumnae participation and they exceeded expectations. Over 130 alumnae donors gave back to the program.
Football - EVER TRUE CHALLENGE - COMPLETED
The Brown Football Association in conjunction with the Sports Foundation looked to solidify the new standard in alumni participation set in 2004 and 2005 with the $125,000 Ever True challenge set forth by Art Joukowsky ‘55, Kevin Mundt ‘76, and Ken O’Keefe ‘76. The goal for FY ‘06 year was simple — to sustain the previous record breaking year for football alumni participation by June 30, 2006. The challenge was a huge success in maintaining the recent growth in former football players making gifts to Brown Football as over 490 football alumni participated.
Men’s Basketball – 100 YEARS CHALLENGE - COMPLETED
Due to the excitement of Brown Men’s Basketball’s 100th Anniversary season, an outstanding trio of former players, Steve Bowman ‘82, Rich Friedman ‘79, and John Lyden ’57 partnered to issue a $100,000 Challenge with the purpose of reengaging the basketball alumni with the program that has given them so much over the years.
The details of the challenge were simple with a dual goal of increasing the number of basketball alumni who contribute to the program by 100% while raising an additional $100,000 above and beyond the $100,000 pledged by these three leaders. The two goals of this challenge were to increase the number of basketball donors by 100% and to raise an additional $100,000 for the program. The challenge was a huge success as 135 men’s basketball alumni participated to raise the additional funds as well as have the $100,000 challenge funds released.
